images used for critique (not re-sized so be weary clicking)
I went into my midterm critique very unsure of what to expect. I had only heard what Tom's class had done. They had the same amount of people go but the whole class was there to critique. I really miss the class aspect but understand that it takes a lot of time to get everyone done. I wish Paul had been there for input. My group has only met with him once. I guess id like all the input I can get. My crit was with Jeff and besides myself, Fallon, Amy, Amber, Jenn and Katelyn. I feel like we aren't very aware of what the other is doing because the amount of blogs we would need to sort through. I still don't know what some of my other classmates are doing. There is only so much time to keep up and do your own thing.
I put my images up in a square. The bottom two were facing eachother while the top to were opposing eachother. I removed my tattoo in the back image but it is on the jump drive I turned in. I just jumped into explaining my concept and left it really open to discussion. I wasn't so concerned that the images say what I am doing because I feel like they are the beginning. Ive discussed the idea of a "control" or neutrality. They reminded some of aboriginal pictures and others of similar racial profiling pictures. I like this response...
Earlier in the week I did a studio shoot with white face paint. I have always been drawn to this idea of paint and putting on color. I am dealing with the idea of biraciality and the idea of choice or acting dependant on situation. I will also be doing a shoot with black paint. Katelyn asked me about the images I showed at the beginning of the semester using latex paint and told me that they were very striking images. I talked to the group about my process with the latex and how I also used it on my face. When I did it on my face I had to protect my face first with vaseline so it wouldn
t actually adhere to my skin. When it was on my body the hot lights made it difficult to remove and I have somewhat sensitive skin on my face. Anyway, she asked what would happen if I documented that whole process. Putting the vaseline on, putting the paint on, removing it, etc. I really liked this idea because I am interested in performance. I like the portrait on the right because of the lighting and the portrait aesthetic. I think that maybe I need to try different types of images and see what works best for me.
I was wondering if it would be more successful to have a black background or white when doing the black paint. I need to try both. Amber suggested a gradient and someone else said grey, because it is in between. Im not sure if that is necessary or over doing it. I like the lighting ive used so far. Its fairly dramatic lighting and ive also moved it around to get full facial shots as well.
Ideas:
-go through old family pictures and scan some (this weekend)
-black facepaint shoot, with film and digital (next week)
-performative latex idea or something similar
-family portrait (Mom/Stepfather/sister/nephew/half bro and sis)--was talking about my experience growing up and what it was like going around in public/social response.
-keep reading literature dealing with concept of "othering", mulatto, biraciality, etc and writing to respond to it
-try everything/shoot more
