9/6-Artist-Lorna Simpson

Artist: Lorna Simpson

Lorna Simpson was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1960. She received her BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts, New York, and her MFA from the University of California, San Diego. She was considered a "pioneer of conceptual photography" and looked to re-examine the process of taking photographs. She is well known by her photographic work coupled with text, often fragments or haikus. "With the African-American woman as a visual point of departure, Simpson uses the figure to examine the ways in which gender and culture shape the interactions, relationships and experiences of our lives in contemporary multi-racial America." She focused on race as well as sexual and gender identity.

I really enjoy Lorna's work. Recently I think she has turned to film. Her basis was race though and subject matter often women. I respond most to her presentation and mode of taking pictures. I like how she couples text along with photographs. I think this is an interesting way of enhancing her work. To me, text can either make or break a piece.
