9/28-Artist-Leasha Overturf

Gallery
Artist Website

Leasha Overturf is a Chicago based documentary photographer that explores childhood, teenage relationships and the family. I was particularly drawn to her self portraiture. She teaches at workshops in Santa Fe and Toscana, Italy. In an artist statement on the Edelman Gallery's website she loosly discussed how she came to doing the self portraits. Like many other photographers she had been doing self portraits for a while but had to step back and re-evaluate why. Her husband is also a photographer and does nude portraits of women. One day he asked her to pose for him. This brought up a lot of emotions in her and she started asking herself questions about body image and ideas other women have about their bodies.

This video was really interesting to me. The idea of the "literal self portrait". She feels more connected to herself and her work by doing self portraits. Note to self: Work intuitively. It was hard to find information on Leasha but I feel connected to her work.
