I have been thinking about my concept and wondering if I'm not being personal enough. Right now I don't feel as connected to it as I would like. A classmate asked if I was doing these characters to find myself... Not necessarily. I think that exploration within your work should help you grow as a person regardless of intent. The more I discuss what Im doing with others, the more I have an urge to stray away. Why do I want to portray these stereotypes/expectations? I talked to a friend about it and I dont want to have to overdo it to prove my point. Humor and parody really have no place in my work.
The word mulatto was originally considered offensive, but like many offensive terms it has had a revival. The first-generation offspring of a black person and a white person. My mother is white and my father black. Everyone's experience is different. There are so many different mixes of races today. Who is really pure anything? I think its odd there is still controversy over interracial couples and procreating.
I want to interview my family members and see their opinions and experiences dealing with the mix of races. I wonder how it was for my mother and my father back when they were dating? They were together in highschool in the 70s. It was still frowned upon then. Was my mothers father concerned she was dating a black man? Was my father's father upset he was dating a white woman? What about when they found out she was pregnant with my older brother John? I know what my experience was but Id like to see theirs too. My mother, father, stepfather, grandparents and siblings...
