9-14-Artist-Dulce Pinzon

I have been surfing the internet trying to find anything and everything about mixed race or cultural identity. When I type in multi or bi racial I get a ton of stock photography. I came across Dulce Pinzon's series "Multiracial" after endless research and being frustrated with google. I guess I need to lock myself up in the library again and look at art books.

The series consists of 16 color portraits of people of mixed racial background. They are photographed on primary color backgrounds to juxtapose the differences of primary colors in relation to the ambiguous and artificial boundaries between races. It questions the viewer and challenges the existence of race in nature. The artist is a native of Mexico and went to school here in America. Her work questions identity, political and cultural frustrations. "Her work has been published and exhibited in Mexico, the US, Australia, Argentina and Europe. In 2001 her photos were used for the cover of a publication of Howard Zinn’s book “A People’s History of the United States”. In 2002 Dulce won the prestigious Jovenes Creadores grant for her work. She won an Honorific Mention in the Santa Fe project competition 2006 with “The Real Story of the Superheroes” series. Dulce is a 2006 fellow in Photography from the New York Foundation for the Arts. She currently resides in Brooklyn."

I really enjoyed her series. It was very cut and dry and to the point. I dont think I will be as straight forward. Id like to do my portraits in different locations and not necessarily studio shots. The blending of race is always very interesting to me. I want to explore the idea of culture within my racial identities.
