Idea(s): Neutrality--Control--Facial gestures
In order to have a successful and legitimate experiment there has to be a control. I am the control. I am the canvas (not to get all artsy ;p). I want to remove emotion as much as possible from the beginning of this "experiment". The question is, how can I be neutral. All other photos branching off from the control are deviations of that. Paul and I discussed facial expressions. My first inclination is to have a straight face. But a straight face can mean several different things. After looking at portraits of myself I realize I usually have a straight/serious face. I know I am just taking a picture but to the viewer I could appear as intimidating/mysterious. When I first meet people and am out of my element I am very quiet, serious, contemplative. I have been told that they thought I was going to be really aggressive/not friendly. This is really interesting to me.
Paul and I discussed that achieving that control shot may end up being a series of shots, possibly even more of a performance aspect. That would be amazing actually. A panel of "controls". If anything, I will have ample shots to choose from. Black background/white background? I was thinking of doing a black background. The light should be very flat because I dont want to evoke emotion through shadows in facial gestures. If the background is black Ill need a hairlight. BUT if I do the white background I could play off of the idea of the passport picture. I take these daily at work. White background/no flash/flat light....horrid picture.
Any suggestions for my control? Does lack of emotion=emotion?
