11/17-Visiting Artist #6-Diego Sanchez

Diego Sanchez

Diego Sanchez is a painter that is originally from Columbia. I thought that it was really interesting that he was so focused on coliseums because it has nothing to do with his heritage. He hasnt even been to Rome. Sanchez spoke of how he enjoyed the architecture and will keep painting them until he gets sick of them. He starts with the surface and builds onto it with stains of color. After several layers of gesso and color he starts to include an image. If he isn't happy with what he is doing he will sand over it and paint over it. He feels as if the work is intuitive and he enjoys working that way the best. The work itself is very vibrant and eye catching. It is very geometric and he often works in grids. I think this is his way of staying organized. His subject matter mostly includes coliseums and chairs. He uses these objects and hopes to find a "happy medium between representation of elements and nonrepresentation of elements..." He talked about how people read visual information and how it is different from person to person. Most of the depth achieved in these paintings is used by overlapping.
